GuRu Wireless

Wireless RF Power Beaming Enabling In-flight Recharging for UAVs

Category:

GuRu Wireless is the developer of a groundbreaking wireless energy transfer technology that provides small UAS and drones with true persistent flight capabilities. The company’s solutions enable extended missions without the need to land for battery charging or swapping.

Developed for mission-critical applications, GuRu Wireless power beaming systems enable tetherless persistent flight for drones. The innovative power beaming systems extend drone endurance from minutes to hours or days through wireless in-flight battery recharging, eliminating physical connections while supporting ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) and communications at operational altitudes.

Proprietary wireless power for game-changing performance

With a unique combination of beam shaping and smart lensing, GuRu’s wireless energy transfer technology has overcome the limitations of previous methods to provide in-flight recharging for mission-critical drones.

GuRu’s system uses a ground-based Generation Unit (transmitter) built around a software-steered 24GHz phased array to convert electrical power into tightly focused RF beams.

How GuRu Wireless Power Beaming Works

How GuRu Wireless Power Beaming Works

Using digital beamforming and proprietary GuRu RF Lensing®, the system forms, steers, and concentrates energy in real time to deliver power efficiently at range while suppressing sidelobes. A compact onboard Recovery Unit (receiver) locks onto the beam, converts RF energy into regulated DC power, and feeds the sUAS battery or power management system. Closed-loop tracking maintains alignment with moving targets, and the system can time-share or multiplex beams across multiple receivers to track and recharge multiple targets.

Industry-leading miniaturization & integration

The solution’s transmitting and receiving modules have been designed from the ground up to deliver the utmost in performance and efficiency. A proprietary custom ASIC employs intelligent algorithms and custom software, and each module includes a fully integrated antenna to provide a complete end-to-end solution.

Generator units are highly scalable to meet a wide range of requirements for power and form factor, utilizing phased-array tiles that can be arranged in a variety of configurations.

This capability is enabled by GuRu’s scalable Long Range Wireless Power Beaming (LRWPB) platform, which integrates power- and weight-efficient receivers into purpose-built aerial platforms. The result is persistent flight operation for applications including industrial inspection, maritime surveillance, and cargo transport.

The technology has currently achieved TRL 6, and has successfully demonstrated over 96 hours of continuous drone flight with recharging at 200 feet.

Applications

Defense & National Security

While small UAS have become a critical tool for ISR and security, they are fundamentally constrained by battery life. Their limited flight time creates mission gaps, leaving defense forces vulnerable in persistent threat environments and requiring more manpower and workload.

GuRu Wireless power for tetherless persistent drones

GuRu Wireless’ mid-air power beaming solution enables drones to stay aloft indefinitely, providing complete and continuous overwatch without the need for battery replacement or mobility-restricting tethers. Unmanned aircraft can recharge onboard batteries while airborne, and are free to switch seamlessly between loitering and extended mission excursions.

Commercial & Industrial

GuRu Wireless’ technology is also ideal for a wide range of commercial and industrial drone applications, such as persistent autonomous utilities inspection and cargo delivery.
